Description
In this magical ravine with steep walls the spruces grow tall and stately. Mushrooms and lichens thrive in the humid environment, which is also very nutritious. They cause many grasses and flowers to thrive here.
The area consists mainly of a 4 km long ravine with steep walls. The Trollegravbäcken has its run through the gorge that runs from Trolltjärn in the north to Granån at the reserve border in the south. The ravine has been eroded into the rock by freezing. The bedrock, which consists of broad-wood porphyry, is particularly sensitive to frost blasting.
In the ravine the vegetation consists of a lush spruce forest with remarkably tall trees. A spruce has been reported to be 41 meters. The fir forest lacks traces of logging and forest fires. Age is estimated to be about 250 years. The moisture and the old forest in the ravine contribute to a favorable local climate for the threatened wood fungus wrinkles and rose ticks. Hässlebrodd and scales are found in the rich right-eared vegetation closest to the stream.
The sides of the ravine are overgrown with pine forest which is sometimes affected by fire. Several trees have up to six fires embedded as fire sounds in the damaged bark. Some trees are very old and a pine has been age-determined to 400 years. The whole area has natural forest character with dead trees in the form of flames (lying dead trees) and dry shrubs (standing dead trees) of both deciduous and coniferous trees.
There is a slogbod and outdoor toilet at the beginning of the reserve. This is where the directions go.
Here is also the start of a 5km long hiking trail. See the Väster Trollgrav Hiking Trail for more information
