The world's largest wooden horse welcomes you to Avesta, a small town that offers everything from a popular skate park and a huge copper coin to prehistoric animals – the European bison.

Avesta is an industrial town and our 400-year old history is retold interactively in its old iron works from the 1800’s. The old iron works is now an interactive museum that has received international awards. Art lovers enjoy Avesta Art every summer, which is an art exhibition that displays a wide mix of art by different national and international artists every year.

Avesta Bison Park is famous for its rescue work regarding the extinct European bison. The mighty animals roam freely in large enclosures around an old farm. Join a guided tour and get to know the history of why bisons live in Avesta.

Nedre Dalälven River landscape biosphere reserve
River Dalälven streams through Avesta like a mighty blue ribbon. This is the area where the meeting between north and south is more apparent than in any other place in Sweden – The limes Norrlandicus. The European deciduous forest region with many hardwood trees meets the Nordic coniferous taiga. Biosphere reserves are chosen by UNESCO.
