Hike in Falun's unique environments, experience the Falun World Heritage Site and enjoy the area's rich nature and wildlife. The trail consists of different paths and loops that together form a 30 km long hiking trail.
Start and end location: There are more start and end points along the trail, for example at Falun Mine, Lilltorpet, Puttbo Bergsmansgård, Stångtjärn illuminated trail and Slätta illuminated trail. At each starting point there is parking.
Length: The hiking trails offer a total of just over 30 km of hiking, divided into four different trails.
Trail markings: At each starting point there is an information board and trail markings consisting of white signs with a water wheel on them and blue markings on tree trunks and set up sticks. All paths and loops are marked in the same way so it can be a bit tricky to know which loop you are walking on, a tip is to download the app "Naturkartan" where you can see the trail and your location.
Difficulty leavel: Easy to medium. It is a varied environment with a few steep climbs and hills and some sections lead over uneven ground with e.g. roots etc.
Environment: The trail goes through forest, over pasture and plains and takes you through the landscape of the World Heritage Site Falun. Mostly paths but also gravel roads and footbridges.
Trail description: Here you can see medieval cabin sites, beautiful miners' houses, ponds and pond houses in a distinctive Nordic nature. Informative signs, picnic areas and log cabins can be found in the area, which is an important part of the Falun World Heritage Site. Falun Mine has always been dependent on the nearby waterways that have surrounded the mining landscape. These waterways have today been cleared and become hiking trails in unique environments with rich nature and wildlife.
An example of what you can see along the road is the Russian Tunnel. A "mini-adventure mine" consisting of a tunnel that was built through the ridge from the highest dam lake Igeltjärn. The tunnel is known by folk tradition as the Russian Tunnel and is said to have been built by Russian prisoners of war.
Facilities: There are wind shelters, barbecue areas, a beach and a toilet at Stångtjärn. There are also wind shelters at Källslätten, Kråkmyran and along Karlsbotjärn. At Stålmyran and Lilltorpet you will find barbecue and swimming areas. There is a well at Källslätten with a lid where you can use a bucket to fetch water. Along the trail there is a café, kiosk etc.
Parking and public transport Parking is available at each starting point. Some of the starting points can be reached by public transport, including Falun Mine, Stångtjärn and Lilltorpet. Feel free to find out different bus times before your trip.
A simpler map is available at the World Heritage House at Falun Mine or download via link.
The project Vattnets väg till gruvan has been organized by the World Heritage Falun's Friends Association in close collaboration and with support from the County Administrative Board of Dalarna, Falun Municipality and the Stora Kopparberget Foundation.
