Light in the Mountain – an underground tribute to light and justiceWhen the darkness is at its deepest, the lights are kindled in the old iron ore mine of Tuna-Hästberg.With helmet, sturdy shoes, gloves, and warm clothing, you humbly knock three times on the rock wall before you descend into the mountain with anticipation. After a solemn walk 80 meters down, guided by pale flickers of flame through tunnels and passages, you reach the underground stage. Here two mythical figures meet: Saint Lucia, bearer of light, and our own “Gruvfru,” the spirit and protector of the mine. Both watch over humankind in the darkness—one with light and song, the other with fire and stern justice.This year, we let their worlds unite in a captivating Lucia celebration in the very heart of the mountain. With a choir of 60 young, radiant voices, the renowned Adolf Fredrik’s Music Classes fill the mine’s halls with moving song that drifts through the darkness like a living flame. Aurora’s fire dancers honor the saint of light, Lucia, and the tyrannical fate she met, by awakening the mountain with fire, movement, and glowing embers—a reminder of both the danger and the warmth in the mine’s deep heart.Together they create an experience where light, fire, and song merge with the mine’s mystique, raw atmosphere, and magical acoustics. Welcome into the depths for a tribute to hope, togetherness, and the power of light in the midst of winter’s darkness.

Clothing advice:

We guarantee a stable temperature and a rain-free event down in the mine. As it is a constant 4 degrees down in the mine, we recommend warm clothes, a hat and a pair of comfortable gloves. Remember that it is better to be a little too hot than too cold.
