Join a walk through Avesta's oldest district, dating back to the 17th century. Stroll among the red-painted workers' cottages and listen to the guides as they recount how people have lived here for almost 400 years.
Gamla Byn is a well-preserved industrial community, beautifully located next to the Dalälven river. The area dates back to the 1630s when a copper refining workshop, Avesta Kopparbruk, was established in Avesta.
The community had its heyday during the 17th and 18th centuries and was a city between 1641 and 1687.
A major fire broke out in 1803. Apart from the copperworks and the church roof, 102 of the 125 properties burned down. Of the approximately 20 farms and cottages that were spared, a number of buildings still stand today. The area now features preserved structures from every century since the 1600s.
There is also a virtual guide available, where visitors use their smartphones and follow a map that allows film clips to be played.
