The site by the river had a wooden church from the 13th-14th centuries, where a stone church was built in the 15th century. The church has undergone changes with the increase in population in Gagnef. Construction of the current church began in 1766.
The church houses an altar cabinet from the 15th century, glass mosaics in the chancel windows and Ottilia Adelborg's large painting from 1929, "St. Göran and the Dragon".
