Koch worked as a painter from 1899 to 1903 and was a student at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1904 to 1906. He was active in the temperance movement and served as its librarian from 1909 to 1910.
For his last 16 years, he lived in Hedemora, where he ran a guesthouse with his wife Sian (Signe) at Lagmansgården, which was also a meeting place for the author group Hedemoraparnassen.
