Siljan Geopark

A ring of experiences in the wake of the meteorite

About us

About 380 million years ago, a four-kilometre meteorite struck and created the area that is today known as the Siljan Ring. The meteorite impact was so powerful that mountains were lifted and turned upside down, and cracks formed deep into the bedrock. Siljan Geopark is Sweden's first national geopark with unique geological phenomena and natural values in several places, so-called geosites. The park, which covers an area of sixty kilometres in diameter, is still under construction, but you can already visit many exciting and geologically interesting places that have characterised the area in different ways.

Places to visit

There is a lot to experience here in terms of geology, nature and culture, regardless of your level of knowledge. Feel free to book a local guide who can provide an extra dimension to the experience through stories. At Naturum Dalarna in Siljansnäs and Rättvik's nature museum you will find more information about the origin of the Siljan Ring.

Keep in mind!

Many of the places in Siljan Geopark are nature reserves, where nature is protected and there are specific regulations. For example, it is not allowed to dig, chop, or otherwise damage the earth's surface and rock formations; damage trees, plants, and animals; make fires; dig up and bring herbs, mosses, fungi, and lichens; bring pets without a leash. There are special regulations for each reserve.
