At Quality Hotel Grand Falun, every room is decorated with details that honor the rich heritage of the Falun Mine, and the cozy atmosphere in the à la carte restaurant invites you to enjoy pleasant meals.

Next to the Falun Mine is Polhem Bed and Breakfast. This beautiful house also dates back to the 1700s and sits right on the edge of the massive open pit known as Stora Stöten. In the past, the mine’s engineers lived here. Today, it’s a popular accommodation where guests can not only sleep well but also spot eagle owls, enjoy sunset views from the terrace, and explore the entire area around the mine.

Explore the Falun Mine

Just a 10-minute walk from the city center, through the district of Elsborg with its characteristic red-painted wooden houses, you’ll find the Falun Mine offering experiences both above and below ground.

Here lies the mighty open pit Stora Stöten, and from the observation tower, you can take in the breathtaking view of the nearly 100-meter-deep crater, which was formed dramatically on Midsummer’s Day in 1687. A scenic walking path circles the pit, featuring signs with QR codes that reveal more of the mine’s history along the way.

The mine area also includes the interactive Mine Museum, Visitor Center, shops, and restaurants.

For a complete visit, join a guided mine tour that takes you 67 meters underground through tunnels, large halls, and deep shafts. You'll hear captivating stories, legends, and folklore that still live on today.

Where to eat in Falun: Top Restaurants and cafés

Falun has a broad range of cafés and restaurants, and it’s easy to find cozy spots to stop by as you stroll through town.

Following Åsgatan, you’ll come to a magnificent early 20th-century building that houses Restaurang Banken. The name comes from the building’s original purpose—a grand bank. At Banken Bar & Brasserie, you can enjoy a well-prepared lunch, the restaurant’s signature skillet dish, or exciting flavors from around the world. Banken Två rum & kök is located in the former caretaker’s residence on a side street and offers fine dining in a cozy, home-like atmosphere.

Right across the street from Banken is the charming café Falu Bröd & Patisserie, an artisanal bakery and stone oven patisserie offering coffee, pastries, and light lunches. A stone’s throw away at Stora Torget, you'll find Gott&Reco, a café and restaurant where everything is made from scratch using natural ingredients free from gluten and refined white sugar.

By the Falu River, in the old fire tower, you’ll find Falun’s smallest restaurant, Spruthuset, offering a menu inspired by street food.

At the Falun Mine area, you’ll also find great food and coffee. Restaurant Geschwornergården serves well-prepared meals, always offering the classic Swedish dish Falu sausage with mashed root vegetables. Gjuthusets café and shop, located right on the edge of Stora Stöten, bakes all its treats on-site. Head to P-za, located by Oscar’s Lave above the pit, for a pizza experience in a unique mining environment.

Cultural Highlights at Dalarnas museum

Located right in the heart of Falun by the Falu River, the Dalarna museum hosts the exhibition The City and the World Heritage, which tells the story of Dalarna’s industrial heritage and the people who lived here.

Other exhibitions include Dressed in Dalarna showcasing a colorful collection of traditional regional costumes, what is likely the world’s largest collection of Dala horses, an exhibit on folk painting from Dalarna, and one on Hagström, the legendary brand whose musical instruments put Dalarna on the world map.

Explore beyond the city: The Landscape of the Master Miners

Outside central Falun lies the mining region where miners and their families built grand homes and beautiful gardens. A perfect day trip is to visit the picturesque village of Sundborn, where remnants of smelting works and slag heaps remain to this day. Here, you can visit the home of the well-known artist Carl Larsson-gården and stroll through the garden of the mining estate Stora Hyttnäs.

You can also rent a bike and follow the Runn Runt cycling trail to the historic Stabergs Bergsmansgård, where you can explore the baroque garden and dine at Stabergs Krog. It's 12 km to Staberg, and you can choose to return the same way or complete the loop around Lake Runn.
