Banvallen in Garpenberg - 5 km

The railway embankment between Herrgården and Garpenberg has been converted into a trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It is an easily accessible route for those who want to explore the nature and industrial history of the Garpenberg area. The trail largely follows the original railway embankment of the Gruvgården-Fors railway, which was decommissioned in 1966, offering beautiful views of Gruvsjön. Along the way, you'll pass several remnants of the mining industry, such as smelting houses and stamping mills. For those who want to learn more, many informational boards have been placed along the route.

Starting Point: In Garpenberg, you can start from Gammelgården or Dala-Finnhyttan station (Stationsvägen 12). In Herrgården, the trail begins at Herrgårdströmmen, next to the bridge after Herrgårdsvägen. Length: Just under 5 km one way. Not a circular trail. Alternative Loop: In Herrgården, there is an option to choose an alternative loop. One follows an old travel route, while the other passes through Herrgårdsströmmen and takes you closer to the Klondyke shoreline. The loops can also serve as a short cultural history walk (1.5 km) for those starting from Herrgården. Parking: In Garpenberg, parking is available at Gammelgården and the church. In Herrgården, parking is possible along Herrgårdsvägen, in a small parking spot near the old stone bridge and the sign toward Banvallen. Transportation: Dalatrafik runs regular bus services between Hedemora travel center and Garpenberg. The nearest stops are Garpenbergs kyrka or Garpenbergs herrgård, both close to the starting points. Markers: Orange paint on poles and trees, marker bands, and yellow trail markers with the trail's own logo. Signs: Along the way, there are many information boards detailing the area's history, closely tied to mining activities. Trail Surface: Banvallen is flat and easy to walk. It consists of gravel and slag stone. In a few places, the stones are coarse. For cycling, MTB is recommended. Rest Spots: Picnic tables are available in Hässhyttan and at Herrgårdsströmmen. Additionally, there are several simpler benches along the trail. Picnic tables can also be found at Garpenbergs Gammelgård, as well as a grill spot near Kolarkojan. Connecting Trails: Banvallen connects to Bensåsleden, Dalkarlsvägen, and Dammsjöleden. The Pilgrims Trail also follows Banvallen, providing several options for those wishing to hike further. Services in the Vicinity:Toilet and Water: Currently, there are no toilets/restrooms or water refill stations along the trail. Food and Drink: In Garpenberg center, there is a pizzeria and a restroom. On weekdays, the Silverorten lunch restaurant near Garpenberg mine is usually open. Groups can also make reservations with Garpenbergs slott or Garpenbergs hembygdsförening. Accommodation: Accommodation is available, for example, at Garpenbergs slott or through private rentals in the area. At the heritage association's charcoal site, there is a coal miner’s hut that is always open for overnight stays.
