Järnfyran 4 km
A hike that goes along well-trodden paths through four different mining areas, where they used to mine iron
Length: 4 km
Description: The starting point for the hike is located 2 km north of the village Helgbo, parking space is available. From there, follow the orange markings to navigate in the area.
The hike goes along well-trodden paths through the woods and over areas of deforestration in hilly terrain. Mining began in the area more than 500 years ago and ended around 1860. Along the path you can find some information about the history of the area.
Along the path you will walk past the forty Svedje mines. In one of the mines, Båtgruvan, the ore was mined from the walls and the roof of the mine from a raft. Here there are also remnants of several buildnings.
You also walk past the steel mines, where there used to be a funicular railway among other things. On Sommarberget you will find the Svanmyre- and Predikstols mine. In the other 13 mines on Sommarberget they used to mine iron that contained vanadium, which was of very high quality.
A simple rest area is located where Kyrkstigen between Insjön and Bjursås cross Järnfyran in the west.
Järnfyran can be combined with Gruvvandringen if one would like to walk further, the total length is then 9 km
From Leksand The start of the hike is two miles southeast of Leksand. From Leksand take road 70 to Insjön where you then turn right towards Hjultorget, in the second roundabout you continue straight onto Timmervägen and go towards Helgbo.
