Carmina Burana – Through Inferno to the Cathedral of Iron Ore
Idkerberget, Äventyrsgruvan, Tuna Hästberg, Krongruvvägen 50n international choral work –In the heart of the mountain, 80 meters underground, a performance space unlike any other opens up.A former iron ore mine is transformed into a cathedral. Raw rock walls, a mirror-still underground lake, and acoustics that carry every nuance. Here Carmina Burana by Carl Orff is performed – one of the most powerful and iconic choral works of the 20th century.
A work about fate and human power
Carmina Burana is based on medieval texts about the transience of life, the games of power, and the relentless energy of passion.
The dramatic opening O Fortuna is one of the most recognizable musical pieces in the world.
But here the work is experienced in its entirety – immersive, intense, and close.
A staged interpretation in the depths of the mountain
In Zacharias Eric Vindbacke’s direction, the descent into the mine becomes part of the work’s dramaturgy. Inspired by Divina Commedia, the audience moves through darkness and light, from surface to depth – both physically and existentially.
When the space opens, it feels like stepping into another world.
World-class voices – in an acoustic that cannot be created above ground
Lunae Chamber Choir performs the work under the direction of Bengt Ollén.
The mountain’s natural resonance amplifies every crescendo, every whisper, every collective exhalation. It is a sonic experience that cannot be reproduced in a concert hall.
Fire as contrast
Fire dancers from Aurora Fire Company add a visual dimension where light and darkness collide – just as in the music itself.
A destination for music lovers
This is not a traditional concert. It is a staged total experience in a unique industrial-historical and underground environment.
For many visitors it becomes a journey worth planning – from Stockholm, the Mälaren region, and far beyond Sweden’s borders.
Carmina Burana in the Cathedral of Iron Ore is an experience that cannot be repeated. It must be experienced.
