Worth a stop
Malungs Homestead Museum, Malung
A very interesting open-air museum of fine old buildings, some from the 16th century, that is worth seeing. The museum has interesting collections of artefacts and objects, and puts on exhibitions, one of which is about the leather industry.
Hallsjökvarn, Mobyn
Hallsjökvarn is a watermill that employs a horizontal, bladed wheel typically used in small streams and watercourses. This is the oldest one on Dalarna.
Vild Hasse, Vallerås
Vild Hasse, or ‘Crazy Hasse’ in English, is the name of the character who runs this store. He is a legend in Sweden and there is nothing he does not know about sausages, as you will find out. He also sells cheese, meats and many other food products.
Fredrikssons Konsthantverk, Malungsfors
Third generation pewterware made in and set in an authentic and traditional Dalarna setting, dating from the 18th century.
Stone memorial to vicar Sjödin, Malungsfors
On the bridge over Västerdalälven river there is a stone memorial to vicar Oskar Leonard Sjödin, the man whose idea it was to build the bridge in Malungsfors.
Edets Kvarn, Yttermalung
An old watermill worth a visit for its great views of Edsforsen river. The river falls five meters over the course of three hundred metres; thus the watermill. In the grounds there are shelters and a barbecue spot.
Eggarnas Nature Reserve, Yttermalung
This area is interesting from a geological perspective as the Malung ridge runs through the area. The ridges and furrows here have remained completely unaffected by the course of the river since the last ice age and are unique to Västerdalälven.
Directions
Directions from the starting point at Malungs Camping that has a spacious car park. Also onsite are toilets, showers and a bike cleaning facility.
From Malungs Camping take a right and continue on the road going north. After about 11 km you will arrive in Malungsfors. If you would like to visit Fredrikssons Konsthantverk continue north for 500 metres, otherwise go left to the eastern side of the river when you pass the bridge over Västerdalälven. Here you will see the stone memorial to vicar Sjödin. At the large intersection take a left and head south towards Malung.
After approx. 6 km you will reach the village of Vallerås. On the right side of the road is the Vild Hasse food store where you purchase food products. And you might even get to meet Vild Hasse himself. If you continue south look out on the right for Hallsjökvarn – a lovely, peaceful and historical setting for the watermill here.
Continue south and when you come to the roundabout in Malung go straight ahead towards Yttermalung. After 3 km you will see Malungs Homestead Museum on your left-hand side – it is a very interesting attraction and well worth a visit. Going further south, ride for around 10 km and you will see Edets Kvarn (watermill) on your left. This is a good stop-off for a rest, a coffee break and to admire the beautiful surroundings.
After another few kilometres you will arrive in the village of Yttermalung where you take a left to go to Hagfors, cross over the bridge and on the first road to the left turn north again towards Malung. After approx. 2 km you will arrive at Eggernas Nature Reserve. Turn left here and cycle through the beautiful nature reserve and then take the gravel path along the mighty Västerdalälven river. On the way you will pass several small villages before arriving back in Malung. Follow the signs for Malungs Camping and on arrival take a cooling dip in lake Bullsjön.
