Bone mill at Sörbäcken – Lima

The bone mill is a major cultural heritage site in Lima. For almost 100 years the pounding of the bone mill could be heard over the valley, crushing bones for bone meal.

The pounding has now been silenced, but the mill is still fully operational.
The stamp mill was in rather poor condition before it was refurbished at the start of the 21st century, with the aid of a grant from the EU.
The bone mill is a reminder of the time when bone meal was used as fertilizer and also as livestock fodder. Bones of slaughtered animals were used as extra nutrients after being crushed in the bone mill.
