Cycle along the canal through historical landscapes and beautiful nature. The trail is 110 km long and offers many alternative routes and variations.
Strömsholm’s Canal follows the watersystem of the river Kolbäcksån through Swedens oldest rural districts in a varying and beautiful landscape – from the mountains in Dalarna, to the lowlands Mälardalen.
The canal passes through 14 lakes in total. The 110km long trail goes from Smedjebacken in the north, through the communities Söderbärke, Fagersta, Västanfors, Ängelsberg, Virsbo, Ramnäs, Surahammar, Hallstahammar and Kolbäck.
Some cultural sites to visit along the bicycle trail are: Lokstallet in Smedjebacken, Flatenbergs hytta, Västanfors hembygdsområde, Engelsbergs Bruk, Oljeön in the lake Åmänningen, Ramnäs Lanchashire-backsmith shop, the industrial museum in Surahammar, Trångfors blacksmith shop and the Canal Museum in i Hallstahammar, Strömsholms castle and riding school.
The dug-out parts of the canal that are only 12km, but contains 26 floodgates and rises 100m in altitude. The canal was officially opened in 1795 and is the second oldest in Sweden.
